The New Zealand Access Class Association is now accepting applications from clubs that are interested in hosting the 2014 NZ Access Class National Championships, and 2015 National Championships/ Kiwi Cup. These two regattas will be the feature pieces of New Zealand's Access Class domestic racing calendar, and are a great opportunity for your club to boost participation and inclusion.
Each regatta is expected to attract upwards of 20 boats, sailed in singles or pairs. In 2013, the NZ Access Class National Championship was held in Auckland and 22 boats took part, four of which were from Australia. The ideal venue would have a safe launching area alongside a floating jetty for the sailors with a physical disability that may require a dock mounted crane to assist them in getting into the boats. Anywhere in New Zealand will be considered.
Not sure what the Access Class boats are? Globally and in New Zealand, there are four different types of boat made by Access Sailing: the Access 2.3, Access 303, Access Liberty and Paralympic Class SKUD 18. The Access sailcraft are unique due to several original design features:
1. Roller reefing system, enabling the sailor to adjust the size of the sail to suit various conditions while under way.
2. Ballasted centreboard, ensuring the dinghy is almost impossible to capsize.
3. Hull design, the innovative concave hull shape of the 2.3, 303 and Liberty promotes additional stability.
4. Seating low down in the boat lowers the centre of gravity and adds more stability.
5. The servo assist option opens up sailing to all people as this joystick can be controlled by hand, foot, chin, or any moving body part. This is a revolution, allowing even people with very profound disabilities to participate alongside their able-bodied counterparts.
Register your interest in hosting these regattas by March 22nd 2013 via the contact information below.
