Help Coastguard this Christmas

Issue date

This December, be part of Coastguard Northern Region's first Christmas appeal - 'Tis the season to save lives at sea.

The team at Coastguard Northern Region are hosting their first Kiwi Christmas dinner event on December 1 at Auckland’s Hilton Hotel. The event includes a three-course meal, drinks and some fabulous entertainment on top of the chance to participate in the value-packed live and silent auctions that will support the 1000 volunteers throughout the region.

Coastguard maintains an infastructure right around the coast of New Zealand to ensure that they are there when the public need them. Coastguard Northern Region is made up of 25 units that consist of 28 rescue vessels, two air patrols and dedicated marine communication networks.

These are run and manned by 1000 volunteers from all walks of life, who drop everything and risk themselves to save lives at sea. The volunteers don't ask a cent for the work they do, but they need the very best equipment and training which is where the support of both members and the public is so important. In 2015, their commitment to the region saw:

  • 135,202 hours dedicated to saving lives at sea
  • 112,358 radio calls answered
  • 1971 calls for assistance
  • 4381 people brought home to safety
