A windsurfing Open Day held recently at Rotorua Yacht Club proved a huge success with local kids welcomed along to the yacht club to try out the sport. Around half of those who showed up will be back at the Club for more.
Despite a gusty westerly more than 40 kids, and a few parents, had a go with over 20 signing for a junior membership and lesson package. Bruce Kendall - two-time Olympic medallist in windsurfing (Gold in 1988, Bronze in 1984) - was there to giving the local kids an added ‘rock-star’ bonus to their day.
“It’s a great initiative by Ian Walbridge and is being supported with learn to sail boards and gear by BOPSAT out of Tauranga,” explains Yachting New Zealand Regional Support Officer Hamish Hey.
Stu Pederson (BOPSAT) and Hamish Hey (Yachting New Zealand) also assisted the club on the open day.
