Grass Roots meets Gold Medals

Issue date

The gold medal girls produced plenty of golden grins amongst Kohimarama Yacht Club’s junior sailors who all turned out on Sunday for a chance to meet some New Zealand’s latest sailing heroines.

The Club Juniors also got a chance to race Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie at the Club Opening Day when the Olympic Champs hit the water in their old P-Class yachts. Back ashore after racing Jo and Polly produced their gold medals generously showing them off to the young sailors who held and wore the notoriously heavy London medals posing for photographs standing shoulder to shoulder with the golden girls.

“I really enjoyed coming back to the club and catching up with the all the sailors,” says Polly.

Jo backs that up, “It was a great day for us! I really did enjoy getting back out on the water especially in my old P Class; I hope it will help build that P fleet, as it is a great boat! And I am very chuffed with my life membership.”

Kohimarama Yacht Club is deservedly proud of the achievements of these two past members and recognised them yesterday with, among other things, life membership of the yacht club - a significant honour.

Just a decade has passed since Jo and Polly were themselves junior sailors at the Kohimarama Yacht Club, really bringing it home to the current crop just what the future could hold for them, many declaring to media just how inspirational the visit was.
