You may have heard that the Flavell Bill has been referred to the Commerce Select Committee for consideration. The bill proposes to make significant changes to our community funding model.
Local councils could be given responsibility for the licensing and operation of pokie machines, as well as the distribution of gaming grants. We believe this would politicise grant funding and be a conflict of interest for councils.
While there are some parts of the bill we support in principle, we are against councils having responsibility for gaming operations. This is not their core business and does not guarantee better or more cost effective delivery than existing LTA’s are already doing.
If you would like to voice your opinion on the bill and how it could affect your organisation, please consider sending the select committee a submission. This website provides some good background information about the Flavell Bill and tells you how to prepare a submission.
The deadline for submissions is 21 June 2012 so you will need to act quickly.
