Last year youth prevailed at the Hartley 16 national championships but this time experience and wisdom won over with Robin Williams and Mike Insley emerging as winners aboard Shaking Laundry.
The pair, who also won in 2015, were one of 18 TS 16 yachts that entered the 51st instalment of the national championships this year hosted by the Manukau YMBC based on Kiwi Esplanade, Mangere Bridge.
Five yachts were in the running for the championship going into the final days' racing.
The Manukau Harbour turned on excellent sailing conditions, with a variety of wind strengths and sea conditions giving everyone a chance to sail in their preferred conditions and race officer Paul Davies set great courses and kept racing flowing.
The Manukau YMBC also provided great off-water activities to go with the good racing and the concept of the Hartley 16 being a family class was exemplified at these nationals.
An especially poignant moment came when Myllys Hartley, wife of class designer Richard Hartley, was made a life member of the Hartley Association. Mrs Hartley and her family are wonderful supporters of the class and have been regular attenders at our annual championships.
