Elliott 5.9 Association February News

Issue date

Welcome to the Elliott 5.9 Class Update for February 2014. Quite a short update this month, with some information about the Kawau weekend (which is shaping up to be huge!) and some indicative dates and venues for the 2014 Traveller Series.

Doyle Sails Elliott 5.9 Kawau Weekend - 7- 9 March 2014

This is a new event for the class and we are really keen to make it an annual get together to kick off the year.  There will be an emphasis on social and family activities but with plenty of our usual quality racing in what is reputedly an amazing venue.  The racing is not part of the 2014 traveler series but there will be prizes for the racing and other events.

We have been really pleased with the level of interest shown already.  It's a mix of our usual sprint races (maybe a wee bit shorter) with some fun and social events.  We have 11 boats so far with a few more to confirm:

1. Retro
2. Brzo
3. Animal Crackers
4. Crowded House
5. Voodoo
6. Slam Dunk
7. Erotic
8. Shapeshifter
9. Cut Lunch
10. Icebreaker
11. Ewok

If you are coming, let us know asap please.  Here are some more details:

This will be a mix of social, yachting and fun events based at Smelting House Bay (RNZYS's Lidgard House). Families, guests and interested sailors welcome to join us for the weekend. We are running a couple of hours of spectator-friendly E5.9 sprint racing and plenty of other events for sailors, non-sailors and kids. This is not part of our 2014 Traveler Series but just as important and there will be prizes for the racing and some special guest stars.

Thank you to Doyle Sails for sponsoring the weekend. We know of 12 Elliott 5.9 crews coming so far with a few other possibles, plus a few special guests, friends and prospective sailors/owners.

There are a mix of accommodation options including camping, lodge and on the water. Many crews and other attendees are bringing yachts and launches to stay on as well as their E5.9's. Tows for the E5.9's are being arranged by the Assn to and from Sandspit (Friday p.m., Sunday p.m.)

So get set for a fantastic, laid back and fun weekend. It is not compulsory to bring an E5.9!! But at least bring your sailing gear, your kids, your SUP, your Wind Warrior, dinghy etc.

Accommodation

Many sailors are bringing launches and keelboats to stay in. There are other accommodation options (e.g. tents, rentals etc). Please contact the Assn if you require assistance or advice.

We welcome visitors

We know some keelboats are also stopping on the way back from the Route 66 to join us for some fun and the Spit Roast on Saturday evening. Spit roast and some refreshments provided but best to also bring your own catering. See draft programme below.

New Hull Build Project

You may be aware that we have announced a major new fleet development initiative - the series build of at least six new Elliott 5.9 hulls.

Boat 2 is out of the mould and we have several more hulls in the pipeline.  It certainly looks like we will exceed our original goal of six new boats.

We have a reasonably detailed order form and if you would like to order a hull, or wish to assist in any way, please give Mike Sanderson, Nathan Williams or Simon Manning a call.
