As other sailing events start to wind down, the very successful Elliott 5.9 fleet are again gearing up for their hugely successful Traveller Series.
This year's series will consist of five events, starting next month at Lake Rotoiti and concluding at Sandspit in September, and will also incorporate the Elliott 5.9 National Championship in Russell on May 19-22.
Last year's series attracted 20 boats, including 16 at the nationals, and Elliott 5.9 Class Association president Stu Clarke expects even more in 2022.
A couple of boats have changed hands and others will return from a short break, to highlight the continued growth of the class.
"The class is one-design and this makes for really cost-effective and close, competitive racing," Clarke said. "The boats are also easy to hook up to the car and tow around the country so it's really simple to get to some great sailing locations."
The class association have also settled on a strong formula for the Traveller Series, with five events targeted over the winter months leaving the summer months free for family and other sailing or sporting pursuits.
This has attracted some high-quality sailors, including some with America's Cup, round the world and Olympic experience.
With a crew of three, everyone has a job on board. There is a also good number and mix of people to ensure a good positive social atmosphere on shore.
The South Island fleet is now well established, and the inaugural Elliott 5.9 South Island Champs were held in 2021, encouraging the class association to potentially support and promote a South Island-based summer circuit.
South Island-based boats also receive a discount to compete in the Traveller Series to support their effort and extra cost involved in competing.

May 19-22: Russell, Bay of Islands (nationals)
June 18-19: Whitianga
August 13-14: Bucklands Beach TBC
September 24-25: Sandspit
