Following the launch of the Doyle Sails NZ Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Lion Red Foundation Youth Training Programme Scholarship in 2015, Doyle Sails NZ is once again offering this opportunity for the 2016/2017 season, which commences in May 2016. Applications for the scholarship are open to sailors between 15 and 23 years old from throughout New Zealand, who are looking to join the squadron’s programme for the first time. All applicants must demonstrate previous yachting experience and portray a genuine commitment to intensive keelboat training.
Entries close on 15 April, with Doyle Sails covering the season’s programme fees for the successful candidate. The recipient will also be encouraged to interact with the Doyle Sails team, drawing on their considerable combined experience and knowledge.
For 2015 recipient Taylor Burn, based in Picton, the scholarship has made a huge difference to his sailing. "I am very grateful to be the inaugural recipient of the Doyle Scholarship and would like to thank their team for supporting me throughout the season,” he says. "It has given me an incredible opportunity to skipper Boat 9 Doyle Sails for the past year and grow my sailing skills enormously. I encourage any young sailor to apply!"
The continuation of this scholarship is one of the many youth sailing programmes and events that Doyle Sails New Zealand supports. Recent events that the team has sponsored include the NZIODA Optimist Nationals 2016, QCYC Interislander Regatta, Auckland Champs Regatta, Jollyboat Nationals, Sir Peter Blake Regatta and the South Island Opti Champs. The 2016 Optimist Nationals also saw the presentation of Doyle Junior Scholarships for the third year running. “Doyle Sails New Zealand is committed to supporting the up and coming sailors of New Zealand and we are proud to see the positive impact that our efforts have had to date,” says Mike Sanderson, Head of Sales at Doyle Sails New Zealand. “We look forward to another round of high calibre applicants for this sought after scholarship and to the successful applicant benefitting from all that the programme offers.”
Applications are open to sailors from throughout New Zealand wanting to join the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme for the first time, in line with the RNZYS application process.
The Doyle Sails Scholarship will cover the successful NEW applicant’s fees for the 2016-2017 season of the Youth Training Programme.
Candidates must be between 15 and 23 years old, must demonstrate previous yachting experience and portray a genuine commitment to intensive keelboat training. Each applicant is considered on merit from information supplied with the application and then at an interview with the RNZYS coaching staff.
In return the plan would be for them to become part of the Doyle Sails family, learning from this opportunity to go on to achieve great things, involving themselves in the greater sailing and sail making communities. Interaction with Doyle Sails would range from being a brand ambassador through to making a career in the sail making and professional sailing world.
