David’s Desk: December 2015

Issue date

Dear Members

Welcome to my final update for 2015! As we head into the festive season I have some great news from the Yachting New Zealand team.

Aon Dinghy and Tender Insurance

Great news… Aon New Zealand has extended their suite of insurance offerings tailor made for New Zealand yachties and boaties. Aon has just launched its very own comprehensive dinghy and tender insurance offering through Vero Marine.

This offer provides a solution to sailors requiring the right insurance cover to enter regattas in New Zealand, with racing cover included and Third Party Liability cover up to $5m. In putting together this offer Aon meets the gap for individuals requiring comprehensive cover for their sailing dinghy. From a Club’s perspective, this policy enables competitors to meet the Notice of Race Insurance Liability requirements for regattas and races your Club hosts.

This policy provides insurance for your boat, trailer and equipment throughout New Zealand, whilst travelling on land, on the water including whilst racing. The offering also extends to cover trailer craft (including powerboats) up to a sum insured of $150,000.

This New Zealand based cover complements the Aon Overseas Regatta and Transit policy that is already available for sailors who compete overseas.

We’ve made it super easy to find out more and apply with everything you need to know with on-line forms available at yachtingnz.org.nz/racing/insurance.

Brilliant up-take of Member Card

I am absolutely delighted that 33 member clubs, and a total of around 4300 individuals, are now signed up for the member card scheme and receiving the benefits available through the programme.

A recent addition to the comprehensive suite of member benefits is discounted pricing on the great range of products available through Safety at Sea. Members receive 10% off all products when shopping online at www.safetyatsea.co.nz

If your Club is keen to get on board with the Member Card and ensure your members have access to the great discounts and benefits like this, I encourage you to get in touch with our Member Card Coordinator Julie Sutherland.

Raising Melanoma awareness

I am really pleased to give you the inside word on an official announcement we will make tomorrow that Yachting New Zealand has formed a partnership with Melanoma New Zealand to work collectively towards raising awareness among yachties and boaties of the dangers of Melanoma.

Melanoma New Zealand were on site at Torbay Sailing Club last weekend with an information tent and free sunscreen handouts for the massive crowd of sailors and parents attending the 2015 Sir Peter Blake Regatta.

More than 4,500 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in New Zealand each year - the highest incidence rate in the world.  Routine self-checking is a vital step to detecting melanoma early and if it is detected early and it's thinly-spread, melanoma can easily be treated with surgery. If left to spread it can be fatal.

We typically spend more time exposed to the sun when we’re out on the water so we are a high risk group. If we can help Melanoma New Zealand by delivering their important messages then it’s a win for everyone.

2015 ISAF World Sailor of the Year and 49er World Champion Blair Tuke will be the face of the partnership getting on board as an ambassador for Melanoma New Zealand, with the aim of raising awareness of melanoma in the sailing community.

2016 Volvo National Sailing and Boating Week

Have you decided what your Club will be doing for 2016 Volvo National Sailing and Boating Week? We have opened on-line club registration and I encourage you to get signed up and let us know what you have planned so we can help promote your activities.

Volvo National Sailing and Boating Week will run from Saturday 13th - Sunday 21st February 2016 allowing you to choose the best day (or days) for your club.

Volvo Sailing and Boating Week is an opportunity for New Zealanders to celebrate sailing and boating, to shine the media spot light on club level sailing and boating activities and to open club doors to the public, encouraging the community to experience the fun and excitement of the Sailing and boating environment!

It is about raising the public awareness of sailing and boating clubs nationally, giving a wider audience a chance to get into clubs and out on the water to discover what the club has to offer them and their families.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
