Cruisers around the country can tap into a growing network of like-minded sailors and learn more about sailing in the process.
Viki Moore, who is based in Christchurch and who recently took over the running of Island Cruising New Zealand, has been running a series of workshops aimed at the cruising community.
These have included workshops on things like the legal responsibilities of skippers, registering vessel, insurance, boat stability, rudders, steering and emergency steering systems, and one on VHFs.
It's only the start of Moore's plans, with the overall aim to create a great cruising network of clubs and yachties around the country and encourage cruisers to join their local club.
"The cruising workshops I have just started are working really well, and I've had heaps of new people sign up to participate," Moore said. "The workshops largely look at the requirements in the safety regulations for category 1 and 2, what people might like to consider when adhering to those requirements, some ideas around the systems they might like to use, templates people can use to record their maintenance and other details and we're also planning webinars from experts talking about sails, water makers, steering systems and that kind of thing."
Island Cruising New Zealand has been around since the 1980s and hope to be able to lead a rally to the Pacific Islands in 2022 and Japan in 2023. Membership costs $75 a year.
