A fleet of cruising boats is due to head south this summer at part of the South Island Rally 2022/23, with one stop scheduled to coincide with March's New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch.
The rally, organised by Island Cruising NZ, will see a number boats depart Opua on December 27 and sail to the Abel Tasman and Marlborough areas. Other stops include Fiordland, Stewart Island, Dunedin and Akaroa before the option of heading to Lyttelton to watch the SailGP.
Island Cruising NZ have designed packages for cruisers to complete the entire journey or parts of it. As many as 25 boats have already booked.
"Cruise with the group or do your own thing, the choice is yours," it says on their website. "We'll help you prepare for the voyage, assist with crew, give you details on where to go, provide back-up support, great discounts and connect you with the others heading in your direction."
