Over the last few months two more clubs have become members of not an “exclusive” club, but the “Inclusive” club!
In America, July the 4th is Independence Day – how fitting then that this was the date that, after a massive three year rebuild, Northcote Birkenhead Yacht Club chose to celebrate the completion of their renovations.
The installation of a lift between both floors now gives people with disabilities and pushchairs independent access to the second floor, where there is a new accessible toilet. An area with floating pontoons has also been developed, with a hoist still to come. This has been designed to benefit many users within the community.
After a lot of planning and fundraising, Ponsonby Cruising Club has also installed a lift and new staircase. It was a red ribbon day on the 17th of August when club member Ken Richardson cut the ribbon (pictured above) and was able to “gain admittance to the bar” for the first time.
Also on hand to test the new lift were other members who had also stopped coming to the club because of the challenges presented by the steep, narrow staircase.
