Close Racing at Secondary Schools Team Sailing Nationals

Issue date

The 2016 Secondary School Team Sailing Nationals were held at Sandspit Yacht Club, Algies Bay. Racing started on Sunday 24th April and continued until Friday 29th April.

31 teams entered and were initially seeded into three fleets, to sail a series of round robins on two courses, with repechages at the end of the first two round robins, to enable teams to progress up or down the ladder, with a system of regatta points being used, enabling all results to be utilised.

Kerikeri High School Open team, sailed steadily to place second in all round robins, to be rewarded by winning the event. Relative newcomers, Kristin School won silver and Whangaparaoa’s Wentworth College had great form in the first and last round robins to secure the bronze medal.

The top girls’ team was again Napier Girls High School, followed by Diocesan School for Girls and New Plymouth Girl’s High School third.

These top three open teams are invited to race against the top three teams from the Australian Nationals, which are still to be contested in July. The three top girls’ teams are also invited to race against the top three Australian girls’ teams. This year’s event is scheduled to be held in New Zealand in September.

The New Zealand Team Sailing Association is very grateful for the enormous amount of work carried out by all volunteers, especially the 15 Umpires required to be on the courses all day, including Chief Umpire Jim Park. The logistics of supplying the extremely large amount of resources was well organised by the event co-ordinator Ross Sutherland Full results and reports on the website www.nzteamsailing.co.nz
