Blustery conditions made it challenging for the competitors in the inaugural Hansa Class North Island championships at the Ngaroto Sailing Club last weekend.

The coaching day on Friday had very little wind but next two days were blustery with big gusts hitting the fleet. All the sailors did extremely well in at times some very trying conditions.
Tony Vaka handled the conditions the best in the single-handed Hansa Liberty class, winning all three races to finish ahead of John Buchanan and Bert Coulter.

Tauranga’s Pauline Chamberlain finished with a perfect three out of three in the Hansa 303 single division. Second place went to local Ngaroto sailor Andrew Short with clubmate Mike Malone third.
The Hansa 303 Double division went to Tauranga’s Alice Eminson and Alistair Eagleson, with local sailor Amy Dunn, competing in her first regatta, and Davey Parker second.

Yachting New Zealand coach development manager Gareth Moore held a session on the Friday prior to the regatta. Although the wind was very light, there was an opportunity for sailors to practice their starts and learn the system of the starting procedure, and also have a lot of their questions answered.
Big thanks to all the Hartley 16 sailors who helped load the Hansa boats back on the road trailers and also to Ngaroto Sailing Club for running the regatta and their hospitality.
