It has been a little while since our successful World Championships in France and although it would have been a rather good time to have a bit of a break post event… We took the alternative option and have spent the last month and a half travelling all over the place – We are currently in Japan, China next week and even a trip to Oman in November – We will tell you what for!!
Our post World’s time has been well filled by each of us visiting family – Polly in London, Jo in Israel, some time in San Francisco to check out the America’s Cup (Jo for the LV finals and Polly for the AC final itself) and a recon trip to Rio with Paul and Dan (the kiwi 470 boys who also had a great Worlds and finished 7th) to check out the venue for the Olympics in 2016, which is now less than three years away! Time has been moving quickly and it seems like such a long time since we restarted our campaign in February this year… It has been very non-stop and still another month and a half to go!
Since we left NZ in July, we have managed to get home for about a week – Polly was home for a little longer, but took a trip down to Wellington to become a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (Jo was still away overseas, so has to wait another year!). We are now in Japan, where we are attempting to sail in between typhoons, then next week we head to Qingdao in China (the venue for the 2008 Olympic Games – which will be Jo’s first time back since the games) for the first ISAF World Cup event of the 2014 World Cup series.
From there we are off to Hong Kong where we will be taking part in the China Cup Regatta, which is a keelboat event where we are sailing with Simon Cooke (past 470 world champ, who coached us earlier in the year) and a few other kiwi’s. Then it is finally back to NZ, where we will head down to Christchurch for a few days to catch up with all of our amazing sponsors, Jo will try and complete the Auckland Marathon and we will squeeze in our university exams before trying to get a few days rest before our next trip!
Which brings us to Oman… We are proud to say we have been nominated as finalists in the 2013 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards, which are going to be held in Muscat, Oman in mid November. So that will be yet another adventure! We really have ticked off our fair share of continents this year!
So to sum it up, we are possibly a bit tired, a little sick of living our of our suitcases and definitely looking forward to the Christmas holidays for some real time off, but still enjoying ourselves, learning heaps along the way and just happy to be able to be doing what we are doing! A huge thank you to everyone who makes it possible!
