A strong westerly pruned sailing’s debut on the first day of the NZCT AIMS Games in Tauranga but the Anchor-sponsored racing that did happen on the water proved spectacular.
With wind gusting up to 25 knots, the three-race opening day schedule was cut back to one race, which was still enough for Francesco Kayrous (Rosmini College) and his schoolmate Campbell Stanton to show their class.
The pair have just returned from the European Optimist championships in Wales, where they were representing New Zealand, and led home the 61-boat fleet in the first race. Thomas Mulcahy (Takapuna Normal Intermediate) finished third, with Rebecca Morgan (Remuera Intermediate) the leading female in ninth.
James Barnett (Otumoetai Intermediate) is in fifth, leading the local charge.
Winds are forecast to drop for the second day, with racing underway at 11am.
