Former commodores are invited to join the New Zealand chapter of the International Orders of Blue Gavel, which aims to assist 'needy' yachting and boating clubs and groups throughout New Zealand.
Blue Gavel is a worldwide club whose members are all former commodores, and the New Zealand arm is working with Yachting New Zealand to help identify projects to support.
The international arm was established in 1953 and cropped up in New Zealand in 1978, playing a large hand in raising funds for clubs damaged by the Christchurch earthquakes.
The New Zealand chapter recently established of a new charitable trust, the NZ Commodores Sailing Foundation, with the principal aim to help fund good causes. These could be in areas relating to boating, sailing, water safety and education.
The trust has access to philanthropic and charitable grant sources and will seek further funding opportunities.
Yachting New Zealand have suggested that clubs sponsor each retiring commodore to join Blue Gavel when eligible, ensuring club participation in the scheme.
Please contact Andrew Morrison from Blue Gavel or Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie for more information.
