Big turnout for first day of winter series at Evans Bay

Issue date

More than 75 boats lined up for the first day of the 2018 Barton Marine Winter Series at the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club in Wellington on Saturday.

The pool of more than $6000 worth of prizes supplied by Barton Marine might help explain the large number of entries - less than 40 boats raced at any one time during summer - but it also shows an appetite for winter sailing in Wellington.

A host of different boats converged on Evans Bay, with centreboard, cruising and trailer yacht divisions as well as Paper Tigers.

Most found the shifty, 20-knot north-westerly winds challenging, but local knowledge certainly helped with sailors from Evans Bay and Worser Bay Boating Club winning all races. See here for full results.

A huge thanks to all the volunteers and Barton Marine for their support.
