2016 420 Oceania Championships wrapped up yesterday with New Zealand locals Josh Berry and Henry Haslett winning six points ahead of Japan’s Kataro Matsuo and Takumi Miura.
Raced on a course area planned for the 2016 Youth Sailing World Championships, teams were given a range of conditions from day one light under 7 knots to day two of 9 – 18 knots. International teams from Australia, Argentina and Japan appreciated learning the local Torbay water conditions including current variance.
Regatta winners Josh Berry and Henry Haslett demonstrated the importance of needing to check equipment after a forestay sheave block jammed after race 4, requiring a return to the beach to miss race 5.
International favourites from Argentina - Camilla Barletta and Micaela del Pero (YCA) after warming up on day 2, collected two second placings to finish the regatta and take home Women’s Gold, while Japan’s Open team Kataro Matsuo and Takumi Miura (YSTT) also collected two seconds, and the regatta silver.
Camilla speaking after the regatta said that the New Zealand training has been integral to their Youth World trial build up, highlighting the strength of the Australian and New Zealand women. Argentina has their youth trials in August and September.
Australian women Sophie McIntosh and Emily Summerell finished 4th women after topping the New Zealand National Championships in March, while New Zealand’s Courtney and Brianna Reynolds-Smith maintained form compared with their result at the New Zealand National Championships where they also finished top New Zealand women.
The Oceania regatta of ten races was preceded by two days of intensive coaching. The NZ 420 Association arranged Leslie Egnot to coach on Friday 3rd prior to the Yachting New Zealand Aon clinic Saturday 4th with Ian Neely.
Yachting New Zealand Aon Fast Track coach James Turner, coached throughout the two day regatta.
Immense thanks are extended to sponsors The Water Shed, Aon and Yachting New Zealand in additional also to NZ 420 Association race officials, MBSC and MBSC Race Officer John Jennings.
New Zealand Team July training includes three New Zealand teams visiting the Open Worlds and a fourth team attending Queensland Youth week.
