Sailability Auckland held their annual have a go day on December 1st, and despite the rescheduled date and conflict with other community events, 16 new sailors turned up to embrace the opportunity to try sailing.
One of the memorable outcomes is from a young man who had just completed an outword bound course, and was so keen that after a short sail with an instructor he was able to go straight into sailing by himself. His sail continued for two full hours, and already he has been fast tracked into the Learn to Sail course at Sailability Auckland.
It was awesome to see several of our current members come out to take new people sailing for their first time, it shows that they are really learning and getting more confident with their sailing abilities.
We had a group from Bupa Rehab who provide a wide range of services specialising in traumatic brain injury. Some of them sailed in the Access 303 while others preferred to get out on the water on The Auckland Blind Sailing Clubs Farr 727. From this experience we will be starting to work more closely with the Auckland Blind sailing Club and getting groups from Bupa out on their Farr 727 in 2013. Bupa have also booked an 8 week “Getting on the Water” course for up to 6 people next year.
