From now until 21 April 2014, you have the opportunity to tell Auckland Council about your experience of the Hauraki Gulf, by participating in the Hauraki Gulf Use and Values Survey.
Stretching from Mangawhai, north of Auckland, to Waihi on the Coromandel Peninsula, the Hauraki Gulf covers 1.2 million hectares of ocean. Local networks, users, mana whenua and other stakeholders hold a wealth of knowledge on the gulf – and have different ideas on how its marine spaces should be used.
We want to hear about the places you visit – sea, coast and islands – and why you value these locations. In completing the survey, you’ll be helping create Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari, a marine spatial plan designed to safeguard the gulf as a healthy, productive and sustainable resource for all users.
The Hauraki Gulf Use and Values survey is being conducted by AUT PhD student Rebecca Jarvis. The survey results, which are anonymous, will form part of Rebecca’s PhD on conservation and social-ecological systems. They will also provide the Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari Stakeholder Working Group with really valuable information about who uses the Hauraki Gulf, for what purposes and why.
Anyone who completes the survey can choose to enter a draw to win a Waiheke Island Explorer Tour family pass for two adults and two children.
