Applications open to join Maiden's latest mission

Issue date

Tracy Edwards and her famous boat Maiden have been changing people's perceptions for more than 30 years and they're looking to do it again after recently resuming a three-year world tour to support females in education.

Maiden departed Dubai in January to start their new campaign and more recently Kiwi Sharon Ferris-Choat took the wheel as skipper on their journey from Palma.

The Maiden Factor Foundation are looking for applications from young female sailors to join the crew at various points as paid apprenticeships. The next intake is September 2022.

Applicants need to be over 18 years old and will have sailed for at least one year. Ideally they will have an RYA Competent Crew certificate but applicants with a good reference could have their Competent Crew, STCW and first aid courses paid for before they join.

Applicants need to be recommended by a teacher, sailing instructor or sailing programme leader. The position is for a young female novice sailor who would like the opportunity to sail and learn, be mentored and travel and explore life opportunities while helping girls around the world access an education.

The Maiden Factor Foundation works with, raises funds for and supports communities to enable girls into education and empower and support them to remain throughout their teenage years to reach their full potential and create better futures.

Maiden will aim to sail around the world at least twice during the three-year period, covering up to 90,000 nautical miles and visiting upwards of 60 destinations in over 30 countries.

The tour might look a little different from previous ones with the pandemic affecting their ability to hold events at stopovers.

Applicants need to fill out the form below and return it to tracy@themaidenfacto.org
