Another top day for Maloney and Junior in Palma, Spain

Issue date

The NZL Sailing Team’s Andy Maloney and Josh Junior have had another top day at Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR Regatta on now in Spain, and are in great shape with two days of competition remaining.

Andy Maloney has extended his overall lead in the 152-boat Laser fleet. Holding 25 points he has advanced to sit 14 points clear of Kristian Ruth (NOR) currently 2nd overall. Tonci Stipanovic (CRO) is just two points adrift of Ruth in 3rd.

In today’s racing Maloney continued his streak of top ten finishes with a 6th and a 2nd in the Laser gold fleet racing. Once again, his high level consistency paid off and he remains well and truly at the top of the leader-board.

Tomorrow, on the penultimate day of the regatta, the Laser fleet are scheduled to sail another two races.

In the Finn class – the Olympic heavy-weight dinghy for men – NZL Sailing Team’s Josh Junior has been relegated to 2nd place on the leader-board today with Britain’s Giles Scott, reigning and multiple world champion, inching into the top spot.

Junior and Scott are equal on net points however, and both well clear of the chasing pack.

Junior, from the Worser Bay Boating Club, sailed very well again today to place 3rd and 6th in the two gold fleet Finn races, but Scott returned a 4th and a win to draw even with the kiwi on 24 points.

Taipo Nirkko (FIN) is in 3rd place overall, 24 points behind the leaders.

In the Laser Radial class Sara Winther opened the day with a 5th place, but was disqualified in the next race. She is lying 24th in her fleet.

Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR is an annual regatta which attracts large fleets in the Olympic class events, including the world’s best sailors, and 2016 is no exception. Racing resumes tomorrow for the penultimate day of competition in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
