The 2016 Starling National Championships are on now at the Naval Point Club Lyttelton, running from April 17-21.
60 boats from around the country, representing over 20 different yacht clubs, are enjoying some great racing and tremendous competition with boats finishing just seconds apart. Lyttelton has turned on two days of good breezes.
The first day produced fairly light but consistent breeze, while day two was up to 15 knots straight up the harbour.
Due to great organisation from Naval Point Club Lyttelton the Race Management team have managed to complete three races each day, in two divisions on trapezoid courses.
“Whilst the fleet is relatively small it was decided to still run a split fleet to keep the division sizes low and hopefully minimise the number of general recalls,” says Richard Brown, Chairperson of the Startling Class Association. “This has been only partially successful but the Race Officer has tried to get the sailors off the water before the afternoon gets too cold.”
The fleet has been split into Gold and Silver fleets now for the rest of the competition which ends on Thursday in time for the sailors to travel to Algies Bay for the Team Racing.
At last night’s AGM it was announced that the 2017 Starling National Championships will be held at Wakatere from April 15-18.
