Issue date

The Canterbury region recently acknowledged and celebrated the year’s achievements at the 2015 Canterbury Yachting Awards dinner held at the Cashmere Club on Friday 5 June.

More than 30 were recognised at the presentation ceremony including category winners and all recent Canterbury Class Champions. Almost 100 people attended the evening, representing all of the clubs in the Canterbury region.

The three major winners were:

Glenda Anderson was named On Water Volunteer of the Year for her work as a major events race officer for the region and for her work in race management at Naval Point Club.

Winton Buchanan (Charteris Bay Yacht Club) won Off Water Volunteer of the Year for his work both in managing a significant club improvement project, the Christchurch Earthquake Appeals Trust funded slipway and access project, and for his support of young sailors involved in team sailing.

The overall winner of the Canterbury Yachtsman of the year Award went to Mathew Wylie, Starling sailor and winner of the Starling Match Racing National Championship last season.

Organisers would also like to recognise the contribution to the awards evening by the guest speaker, Harold Bennett. Harold entertained the crowd with his insights into the America’s Cup events of the past 30 years and shared his sailing experience with local administrators and sailors.
