New Zealand’s first Olympic sailing representatives were Peter Mander and Jack Cropp in 1956 - and they won gold in the Sharpie.
Since then, New Zealand has won a total of 23 Olympic medals (nine gold, eight silver, six bronze), and is yet to get the country's first Paralympic sailing medal.
Sailing is the third most successful sport in New Zealand behind rowing and athletics. It became an Olympic sport in 1900 and has appeared at every Olympic Games since 1908.
New Zealanders competed at the first demonstration Paralympic sailing event in the Sonar and finished fifth at Atlanta 1996. At the 2000 Games, New Zealand was represented in both the 2.4mR and the Sonar, and in 2012 the first SKUD 18 team took part in the Paralympics. The race format for the Paralympic sailing events was essentially the same as the Olympic Games, although all events were fleet racing, and there was no medal race.
