Submit for the Marine Hub and NOWSC

Issue date

The Draft Takapuna Reserve Management Plan (RMP) was publicly notified on July 10th 2012.  In the plan is provision for the National Ocean Water Sports Centre (NOWSC) and Marine Hub. The NOWSC will become Yachting New Zealand's future high performance centre and as well as having provision for community use will include secure storage for boats, paddle boards, kayaks and Waka-ama, and space for administration staff and coaches.

Following the hearing of submissions on the plan in October the Takapuna Devonport Community Board will make a decision on whether to adopt the plan or not.

Yachting New Zealand encourages everybody that is interested in this marine hub project to review the draft reserve management plan, and submit in support of its development.

The submission period closes on 11 September 2012, and will be followed by reserves act hearings, to which submitters are able to speak to their submissions. Submission forms may be downloaded from the Auckland Council Website, and we request that all supporters of this initiative ask to speak at the hearings.

This project is being supported by the Takapuna Devonport Community Board, the Harbour Access Trust, Yachting New Zealand, High Performance Sport New Zealand, the Lion Foundation and the New Zealand Community Trust.

“Yachting New Zealand is happy with what has been proposed by Council with regards to this Draft Reserve Management Plan” said David Abercrombie, Yachting New Zealand’s Chief Executive.

This is a unique opportunity for the needs of the wider Auckland community and high performance sailing to be met on the same site. It will be more than a High Performance Centre for sailing, but also a centre of excellence for other sports including triathlon, swimming, kayaking , waka ama and more.

“Not only is this exciting for our sport but also many other marine based sports and the greater community,” David continues.  “There is nothing in New Zealand that compares”

Contact David Abercrombie for more information, or for assistance completing your submission.
